Bringing Our Toddler “Zoo” to Life Through Play & Story
In the toddler room at St Luke’s Early Learning Community, we’ve created something that children simply cannot walk past without stopping! What began as an ordinary piece of furniture, its bars resembling a miniature zoo enclosure, has become an irresistible, hands‑on experience for curious toddlers.
Filled with wooden and plush animals and paired with the popular book Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, our toddler “zoo” is designed to be touched, held, rearranged, explored, and enjoyed. It’s a space that invites little hands to reach out, little bodies to lean in, and little imaginations to unfold.
An Experience Toddlers Can’t Resist
Toddlers are drawn to experiences that feel real, familiar, and interactive, and this zoo offers all three. The animals are just the right size to grasp. The “enclosure” feels exciting to open, fill, and rearrange.
The moment toddlers see it, they are compelled to:
- pick up the animals
- move them around the zoo
- match them to the pages of the book
- make animal sounds
- retell the story in their own wonderful way
This is the power of an irresistible experience... learning begins before we ever say a word.

Literacy That Comes Alive in Their Hands
When toddlers can physically touch the characters from a book, literacy becomes more than listening. It becomes sensory, real, embodied. With Dear Zoo right beside the animals, children naturally begin to:
- connect the story to the objects
- repeat familiar phrases (“too big!” “too grumpy!”)
- sequence the story through play
- act out moments from the book
- explore early comprehension in a joyful, hands‑on way
This is literacy made accessible, playful, and meaningful.
Connecting to Familiar Experiences
Most toddlers have visited a zoo, or have at least seen one in books, songs, or on outings. This familiarity makes the play experience even richer.
When children recognise something from their own lives, they engage more deeply. Our toddler zoo helps them make connections between:
- places they’ve been
- animals they’ve seen
- stories they remember
This sense of “I know this!” builds confidence and encourages language, storytelling, and imaginative play.
A Space Made for Wonder, Touch, and Imagination
We didn’t set out to create a display. We set out to create a feeling... a playful space children couldn’t resist entering. And it worked!
From carefully choosing plush and wooden animals that feel good in small hands, to placing the Dear Zoo book within reach, to using furniture that mirrors the look of an enclosure, the whole setup is designed with toddlers in mind.
It’s beautiful.
It’s familiar.
It’s open‑ended.
And above all, it’s irresistible!
Where Story, Play, and Experience Meet
This zoo reminds us that when we combine meaningful materials with familiar stories and thoughtful design, something special happens:
- Learning feels like play.
- Play feels like discovery.
- And toddlers can’t help but lean in and explore.
At St Luke’s, we believe in creating experiences that children want to be part of... moments they can touch, move, and make their own. Our toddler zoo is a perfect example of how a simple idea can become a powerful place for imagination, language, and joy.
