Bringing Enlighten Canberra Into Our Learning Community
Every year, Canberra bursts to life during the Enlighten Festival, a celebration of art, light, culture, and creativity across our city.
At St Luke’s Early Learning Deakin, we see festivals like Enlighten as opportunities for children to deepen their understanding of the world around them. That’s why we bring elements of the event into our learning spaces, creating an environment where children can connect with their community in an engaging, age‑appropriate, and meaningful way.

Why We Bring Enlighten to St Luke’s
At the heart of early childhood education is the belief that children are citizens of their community. Not simply future members, but active participants right now. By exposing children to what’s happening in Canberra, we strengthen their sense of identity and belonging.
Our Enlighten-inspired set-up allows children to:
- experience local culture firsthand
- engage with celebrations in a safe, accessible environment
- connect what happens at St Luke’s to the wider community
- develop curiosity about the world beyond their day-to-day routines
It’s our way of embedding children in the life of Canberra and helping them see themselves as part of something bigger.

A Multi-Layered Experience for All Ages
What makes this experience so special is that it resonates differently with children depending on their age and stage of development.
For our infants
Even though they may not understand the festival itself, they are naturally drawn to the colours, shapes, and movement overhead. The shifting lights, shadows, and reflections create a soothing sensory environment. They notice the glow, the motion, and the gentle visual stimulation — the beginnings of curiosity.
For toddlers
This age group engages with Enlighten through exploration and discovery. They touch materials, watch colours shift, and point out what captures their attention. It’s a chance for them to express early wonder and begin forming connections between what they see at St Luke’s and what their families might see in the community.
For preschoolers
Our preschool children are captivated first by the visual excitement — the vibrant displays, the interactive elements, the imaginative environment. From there, rich discussions begin:
“What is happening in Canberra?”
“Why do people celebrate?”
“What makes Enlighten special?”
These conversations build a foundation for understanding community events, culture, shared celebrations, and the idea that people come together for enjoyment, creativity, and connection.

Learning Through Celebration
Festivals like Enlighten offer powerful learning opportunities because they touch all the senses. They provide real experiences, not just images or descriptions, that children can feel, see, and immerse themselves in. These experiences foster imagination, encourage storytelling, and invite children to express their thoughts about beauty, creativity, and community.
Our goal is to give children a “taste” of these wider celebrations right here at St Luke’s, helping them connect what happens inside our centre with what happens across Canberra.
A Celebration of Community, Belonging, and Wonder
As educators, we see first-hand how strongly children respond to experiences that feel bigger than themselves... experiences that light up their senses, spark curiosity, and encourage them to ask questions. Enlighten is one of those moments.
By bringing elements of the festival into our learning spaces, we are weaving the children’s learning into the wider story of the Canberra community.
It’s a celebration of:
- belonging
- creativity
- cultural connection
- shared community experiences
- the joy of discovery
And most importantly, it’s a celebration of how children see the world — with wide eyes, open hearts, and endless curiosity.
